My 23 year old son was arrested for possession of marijuana less than an ounce and possession of tools for commission of a crime (bong and pipes for smoking marijuana). I am told the later is a felony. What kind of a plea deal usually happens in a case like this?

It does (or should) not matter what usually happens (if there was such a thing). The only common sense thing to do in a criminal case is to get a lawyer.
