Legal Question in Employment Law in Georgia

City Employee Facing Problems After Supporting Political Candidate

My question concerns a persons right to express his support for a political candidate. As a small town police officer I showed support for a candidate for County Sheriff by signing a guestbook on the internet. Since then there has been problems with talk of being terminated for showing such support. No city equipment, time, etc. was used to show this support. Can I be terminated for this?

Thanks!

Re: City Employee Facing Problems After Supporting Political Candidate

In the public sector, you could be fired for any such reason. However, in the private sector, you have additonal protections that are not granted to private-sector employees. You should find an attorney who concentrates in public sector employment law. If you would like a referral for an attorney in this area, please let me know.

The foregoing is general information only, not specific legal advice. No attorney/client relationship has been created or should be implied. I recommend that you speak with an attorney of your choosing before taking legal action.
