Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Illinois

what am I liable for?

At spring break of 2003 I proceeded in moving into my to be apartment for the coming year. I did not sign a lease and it was made verbally clear to me by the other 4 roomates that I didnt have to pay rent. I helped to pay for utilities and the water bill which went right to management. I lived there for 4 months, never paying rent, and never being shown a lease or given any info about the lease's legal info. Recently the 4 girls who were all lease holders, were given a notice for a fine to be paid due to a 5th person living with them. It is a charge of $1060. I offered to help pay 1/5 of it, seeing as how i was one of five girls. They requested that I pay more, a fee of $400 on my part ($100 for 4 months) I refused this as they went behind my back and tried to sneak my approval of this payment without my knowledge. Overall, I sent a check for 1/5 of the fine. I dont believe that i should have to pay any more and I was wondering what legally, they could do to me or if this would even hold up in court. I never signed anything saying i was on a lease. And i dont think I am liable for anything legally here except for what i feel i should pay due to moral responsiblity......

Re: what am I liable for?

And you would be right! It is the lessees' responsibility. However, why you think you shouldn't pay rent like the rest of the world is beyond me!
