Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Illinois

probate

My father passed away 02/11/07. His house was ransacked as his body lay on the couch by his step people. They took important papers from the house before an ambulance was called. My father told me and several other real family members that he had an insurance policy, but it was never found. Is there a way for me to find out if someone took it? Also, being a veteran, monies should have been donated for some of his funeral expenses, also social security of $250. I had to take money from his bank account ($3,800) to pay for his burial. I need answers as to what rights I have. There's much more to this sad story such as, taking vertical blinds from his windows, a diamond out of his ring from a funeral parlor, etc. Can you help me?

Re: probate

I am sorry for your loss and for the manner in which the family is adding to your pain.

You do not mention whether the "steps" included your father's spouse.

You should speak to an attorney as soon as possible to ascertain your rights, and the property value of your father's estate. The cost of such a meeting will be well worth it.

Good luck to you. Let me know if I can assist.
