Legal Question in Family Law in Kentucky

college tuition

My stepdaughter was raised from the age of 3 in Kentucky and is attending NYU. She is in her 3rd semester and has applied for very few scholarships,so tuition is very high! Her mother is an opthamologist, father is a postal carrier. No marriage - mother quit lucrative job to attend med. school, no income for those years, Dad's child support was high to cover her no income. We're in debt over $19,000 so far for school - can we be forced to pay for expensive college? I have worked for 21 years, 52 years old, husband is 53, the mother is about 10 years younger. How can I protect my income from being responsible for paying off any debt if something were to happen to my husband and can he be forced to pay for this at all, can he be forced to pay 50%, given his salary compared to a doctor's salary and years left that she has to make the high $$. He is very interested in helping his daughter and has always been very financially accountable, and as I said his support was bumped up to cover the fact that the mother quit her job to spend years in med. school. She had been making the same money as he was at the time, entry level job. The child was born in Florida, raised in Ky & child support was set in KY.

Re: college tuition

In order to advise on this situation, I would have to see the divorce papers and settlement agreement if one existed.

Re: college tuition

Well, there are really a few different issues in you question, but one key fact is missing. How old is the child now? In Kentucky, the statutory maximum for child support is age 19 (if in high school) or graduation from High School, whichever comes first. Unless the divorce decree calls for something else, then I doubt anyone is obligated to pay for college other than the girl herself.
