Legal Question in Employment Law in Maryland

My employer was purchased over a year ago and we were forced to sign a non compete. We will be losing a contract that will mean I will be laid off by no fault of my own. The new contracted company has offered me a job but I can not work for any competing company for 1 year according to the non compete. My current employer is offering me a severance package, what legal rights do I have in Maryland

This is really a case by case scenario. There are several ways to get out of a contract or are deemed reasons such as it being an unreasonable restraint of trade or unconscionable. An additional question is what the consequences of the breach are. Its a situation where you will probably have to get an attorney to sit down and review the contract with you.
