Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Michigan

Money Judment

I am summoned to be in court for failure to pay rent owed. The plaintiff wants a money judgment and to evict me. If at the court date, i do not have the rent money, will i be sent to jail?

Re: Money Judment

Failure to be able to pay rent will not result in jail. At court they may enter a judgment against you that allows you to be sent to collections latera money judgment. The court will give you 10 days to pay rent from the day of court or to vacate the home. If at that time you have not paid or moved out the Landlord may come back to court and seek a writ for eviction. That means a few days to a week after court you may have a Court Officer arrive and provide you 24 hours to move out or be moved out under the supervision of a Court Officer.
