stocks left intestate, no beneficiary named

my mother died without a will. she left about $3000 worth of stocks with no beneficiary named. my brother and i are the only family decendents. what forms and procedure is required to be named as her representative in order to have stocks tranferred to our names? where can i get them?

Assuming your mother was a Michigan resident when she died...

If the stock is the only asset your mother left that requires probate to transfer you should be able to do so using a small estate procedure in probate court. The probate court will be the one in the county in which your mother resided.

If your mother was a resident of another state at death, then you would have to check that state's probate procedure for the answer.
