tape recording a conversation

Is it against the law to record a conversation without the other persons consent and play it to others and threaten to use the tape recording as a form of harrassment ?

Check your state law regarding taping conversations. You might check in the civil laws. Also, check the harassment laws and the right of privacy. Most states do not permit the taping of a conversation without the consent of the individual who is going to be taped. Thus, if a person commits a violation of law by doing that, they can be held liable for any improper use of the recording. This, however, is controlled by state law, unless it becomes a bigger constitutional issue.
