Legal Question in Technology Law in New Jersey

Email Snooping

Is it illegal for a work ''supervisor'' to hack into my personal email account. The emails may have been sent during work hours but I just wanted to find out if she had the legal right to snoop through my personal emails?

Re: Email Snooping

Hello,

As a general rule of thumb, employees do not have an expectation of privacy when using company computing resources. This is usually outlined in the company policy. Occasional use of company computing resources for personal matters, if done during a lunch break or after work hours is sometimes permitted.

If by personal email, you mean an email account outside of your work email address (yahoo or hotmail), your supervisor would not be permitted to login using your username and password to gain access. This would in most cases be illegal.
