Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey

Cancelled Check

I am moving out of a rental home and my landlord was to show me were he originally put my security deposit when I first moved in. By NJ law he most show me were the sec. deposit was deposited and this was never done. We had an agreement that he would show me what bank it was deposited in as long as I paid the last months rent. I sent him the check and after 5 days of not recieving his info of my sec.deposit I cancelled the check now he is taken me to court for a bounced check. He broke the agreement.

Re: Cancelled Check

I do not see what crime you could be charged with. You paid using a check drawn on sufficient funds and then simply changed your mind about paying because you were entitled to use the security deposit for rent because the landlord failed to advise you of where your rent deposit was being held. He also owed you an annual interest payment, minue one percent for the expense of maintaining the account.
