Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey

I received a ticket for fare evasion on the path train in newark, nj. When i received the ticket, the officer told me that it would be a 30-something $ fine. Now, i called the court to make sure that it was that amount and to send the payment, the lady in the municipal court told me that i have to appear to court now- nowhere did it say this on my ticket ( there is a appear in court box on my ticket and it was not checked) She gave me a court date which i am unable to attend because im out of state. Is there any way i can just pay off the ticket and get it over with and not go to court? I faxed the judge a letter saying that i will not be able to make it as i am out of state and request to reschedule. Apparently the judges check their faxes for the court date on the date itself, so i will not know in advance!

SO, now what happens if my request is denied? Also, what are the chances that my request to move the date will be accepted?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, my date is tomorrow. Thank you!
