Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey

Child divorce parents - parental guardianship

Can a 17 year old divorce their divorced parents and go live with someone else? I am currently living with my father who is a substance abuser and my mother is not able to care for me.

yes, sort of. if you really want to do this, please sit down with an attorney and get some advice as to what filing for and getting 'emancipation' will and will not do for you.

good luck. you seem like a thoughtful young person, and i think people (even attorneys) would be willing to meet and assist for free. You could check with Legal Aid in your county. But you may do better just asking for a favor from a local lawyer.

If you would like, give me a call; I am in northern New Jersey. I will discuss this with you; the telephone consultation will be free. I would be happy to help you out.
