Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New Jersey

Old business partner suing me

2 1/2yrs ago I opened an auto body shop in NJ with a partner - after 6 monthes he began not showing up. I confronted him,he said that this wasn't for him and left. I was Buried with bills and $4000 month rent. He wrote a check to himself earlier in the week emptying the bank acct and came to find out that he had never completed the Body shop license correctly and I was fined $5500 from the state - After 2 years of borrowing money to keep my shop afloat i;m ok with no ties to him. Today I was served with a Bergen Co. civil complaint saying That I owe this guy $26500.No 1, I'm in Passaic Co. not Bergen. He fleeced the business while he was there and I stored his car for a year and a half before having it towed to his house. He left on his own accord and I was holding the bag, Does this guy have the right to come back 2 years later and say he's owed money. I didn't ask him to leave but he claims I promised to pay him to leave the business - Nothing in writing and the only time I heard from him was 1 yr ago with a letter from his lawyer saying he wanted $9500 from half of the security deposit. I sent a copy of a cancel check that he wrote to himself for $9500. I need a new atty, my old one has become too large for my small issues

Re: Old business partner suing me

Sounds like there are a number of issues involved which need to be discussed. Initially, I wonder, based upon your description, whether your former partner may owe YOU money, rather than the other way around. My firm regularly handles commercial disputes like this and I would be happy to speak to you in detail about your situation and how we can help. Please send me your contact information so we can arrange to discuss this further.

Re: Old business partner suing me

I have read what the other attorney wrote, and he is correct. There are a lot of legal issues here, and your old partner might owe money to YOU!

You need an attorney.

I would like to represent you, because you sound like a good client, a reasonable guy with a decent business who is now being attacked in a lawsuit. I would be happy to defend you. You will need to discuss with me what your options are.

If you would like, give me a call; I am in Hackensack directly across the street from the Bergen Courthouse. I will be happy to discuss

this with you; a brief telephone consultation will be free.

My contact information can be obtained from the links below, just click on the Attorney Profile link. Let my secretary know you found me through LawGuru.
