Legal Question in Family Law in New York

child's last name

My ex boyfriend and I are expecting a son this May. I would like the baby to have my last name due to the facts that a.) we are not married nor plan on getting married, b.) he will be away at school for the next year c.) the baby will be living with me. Is there anything that he can do to fight my decision of the baby having my last name or is the decision mine to make (legally.)
