Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New York

If I draw up a contract in New York State, without having it drawn up by a lawyer, and both parties sign it, is it a legal contract that will be recognized in New York State courts?

Unless there are allegations of fraud, mistake, misrepresentation, misunderstanding, ignorance duress or myriad other defenses and both parties have already substantially started acting on the contract in good faith, it should hold up in court.
