Legal Question in Juvenile Dependency in New York

juvenile dependency laws in NYS

My Son left home when he was 17. He is now 20. He has a bill from a dentist from when he was 19 that he did not pay. We received a call from a collection agency saying that we were responsible. Are we?

Probably not. There are some issues that need to be discussed, but generally, after a person turns 18 he is responsible for his own debt.

Tell them he doesn't live with you and you did nothing to make the debt your own, and that further attempts to illegally collect the debt will result in your reporting the agency for unfair debt collection practices. Unless you fall into a catagory that assumes the debt, they will stop trying to collect from you.

Good luck.
