Legal Question in Criminal Law in Ohio

I have been living with a friend in Ohio for the last 7 months. 2 days ago he locked me out of his house. Over a perio of seven months i have paid $1450.00 in rent by cash and check. We had a verbal agreement of $300.00 per month( no written leasee agreement.). I owe him approx 650.00 in back rent as of today.Two days ago he locked me out of his home. I have over $5,000.00 of personal possesions in the home which he is holding for ransom and now is demanding $2500 be paid in cah to him and the he will release my possessions back to me. Do I have any legal recourse? Also,what is the proper procedure to have my possessions returned to me. Should I contact local police department to have of record and ask for police escort while attempting to repossess my belongings.

Please help me I am desperate homeless and broke and in fear of his verbal and potential physical threats.

In Ohio this is a landlord tenant law issue not a criminal law issue. Relations between landlords and tenants are governed by the Ohio Landlord Tenant Act of 1974. Part of that Act is Ohio Revised Code 5321.15. That part of the Act prohibits a landlord from engaging in what are called "self help" evictions, meaning an eviction without going through the statutory eviction process laid out in Ohio Revised Code Section1923.04.

That section of the law provides for actual damages and attorneys fees if you can show that the landlord locked you out without a hearing before the court after filing an eviction. But it isn't something that involves the police. You would have to file the lawsuit. You could sue in small claims court. Because the law provides for attorneys fees it might not be that hard to find an attorney to take your case. This is especially true if you have anything in writing from your ex like an email in which he admits what he did or in which he threatens you in regard to your belongings.
