Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Tennessee

Am I liable for my spouse's debt?

My fiance has a large debt as the result of a ruling on a civil suit more than 10 years ago.

To my knowledge he has not paid on the debt because he's been unable and no attempts have ever been made to garnish his wages.

My question is that when we marry, do I take on obligation of his debts from before we even met?

We have separate checking accounts and do not own any property together, but I would like to know if we should always keep things separate.

Re: Am I liable for my spouse's debt?

If it has been more than 10 years and the plaintiffs have never tried to collect on the debt, they may be unable to collect it now. However, you may want to keep your accounts separate if your fiance has other financial problems that may come to haunt you later.
