Legal Question in Family Law in Tennessee

Changing my child's last name without adoption

My son want's his name to be the same as mine. So I am wondering how I can change his name. He is 7 years old and was born in TN. I was divorced there and now am remarried. The father in TN has nothing to do with my son except for court ordered child support I recently lived in TN again for a year, but I have been in IL for over a year again. His father has stated when god is willing he will see his son again, but that doesn't seem like it will ever happen. Please help.

Re: Changing my child's last name without adoption

Hello -

You can file a petition for

a name change on behalf of

your son. Of course your

child's father must receive

notice. In Illinois, change

of name petitions are usually

filed in the Chancery Division

and you should get legal

representation to do this.

I hope this information is

of help.
