Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

Filing Adoption Paperwork Myself

Hello, I married a woman who had a child from a previous relationship (not married). The father has had no ties with the child since birth (6 years). We cannot afford an attorney to start the adoption. I have the petition already prepared but do not know how to go about filing it. Where do I start? I is uncontested.

Re: Filing Adoption Paperwork Myself

I admire you for adopting your wife's child, but you wouldn't attempt surgery on the child yourself, would you? You should not try to do an adoption yourself. There are too many issues , and if it is not done correctly, the biological father could contest the adoption and then you WILL need an attorney. If you live in the Dallas - Fort Worth area, you can call me at 817 763 0600. If you truly have no money, then call your local Bar association and ask if there is an organization in your area who will handle the adoption for little or no cost. A local law school may also have a legal clinic that will handle family law. I do not recommend trying to do this yourself. This is significantly different that a do-it-yourself divorce.
