Legal Question in Personal Injury in Texas

My boyfriend was recently involved in a fight with a relative. The relative pressed charges for assault with a deadly weapon, but now wants to drop them. Will he be able to just drop them, or can the county deny it? Also, is there a time limit on dropping the charges, as in if he waits to long will it be denied all together

The relative can say he does not want to press charges. Regardless, the State will want to go forward. The State, however, will have to present proof beyond a reasonable doubt of the assault with a deadly weapon.
