Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Virginia

Confiscation of dog

We are in a nasty custody battle in NC. I moved to VA 3 months ago and brought my dog. Ex gave dog to me though bill of sale is in his name. He was abusive to the dog and did not want it. He threatened many times to take him to the pound. I wanted the dog. I took care of the dog during our relationship. I have receipts for all vet bills. These are recient since my ex would not allow me to take the dog to the vet. As custody escillates, he now wants my dog. How do I prevent him from taking my dog? What do I need to file in VA? Must I also file in NC?

Re: Confiscation of dog

Sit tight and let Mr. EX sue you in a general district court of your new state of residence(the Commonwealth). Make no offers to return the dog. You yourself need file nothing, but keep all of your vet and other dog-related care receipts handy and perhaps the names, addresses, and phone numbers of any folks who would be willing to support your claim under oath in a Virginia court of law.
