Legal Question in Traffic Law in Virginia

Reckless Driving in VA

I received a reckless driving ticket on I-95n in the safety corridor in Prince William Cnty. I already have 6 points on my license for a previous ticket for going 20 over, and there is another ticket on my record for 20 over from FL, but no points for it.

I want to know what to do. I am very scared. I am researching lawyers. They are between 750-2500. That's a big spread. And honestly I don't have the money. Do I have any hope n this matter, or do I just represent myself? If I do go with a laywer how should I decide on who to represent me? Is there anything at all I can do to keep from

1. going to jail

2. having this on my record

3. having my drivers license suspended

I have never been in serious trouble. I have a good job working for the gov't. Will this effect my top secret clearance? Please help!!

Scared to death!

Kathy

Re: Reckless Driving in VA

You should be able to retain counsel to represent you on the reckless driving charge for around $500.

This is a Class 1 misdemeanor and therefore a jailable offense in the Commonwealth and a

reason to have an attorney by your side who should be able to arrange for a disposition of the charge which involves something less serious

such as a speed infraction or perhaps, even the disposition of Improper Driving.

Under no circumstances should you plead guilty to reckless driving which could have serious consequences for your driving record, your insurance premiums, future employment applications, and your pocketbook as well.

Re: Reckless Driving in VA

The first thing you should do is take a

driver improvement course to earn +5 points,

as soon as possible, so it will be on your

record. Otherwise you will automatically lose

your license if you have 12 points or more.

Also you need to expect to be found guilty in the

general district court, you will appeal and ask

for a jury. Then you will have a whole new

trial in circuit court with a jury.

There is a good chance that you will have a

90 day restricted license and lose your license

for 90 days.

You will probably not go to jail or anything else.
