Loan agreement or payment for services rendered?

A fellow paid me $1000 to accompany him on a trip for a week. Now he says the money he paid me was a loan. He is using the check as proof -- he wrote the word ''loan'' on it. (I didn't see the check itself before it was deposited in my account.)

Question: does writing the word ''loan'' on a check make it so?

Didn't you have to endorse the check to deposit it?
