notification, if I am a beneficiary
My spouse and I were divorced a year before he died .He had left
me as beneficiary on his bank accounts. I know this because the
bank sent statements after his death, and I was joint owner. I
believe he left me as beneficiary on a small life insurance policy.
Would I have been notified by his estate or notified in some way if I
was beneficiary on any accounts or pensions or insurance
policies. I have never received any information from the attorneys
handling the estate.
I called his former employer and learned I was a beneficiary on his
pension.
This took place in Alabama. Can I request records from the
attorneys or court records?

The simple answer to your question is that you can ask, but they don't have to give you anything.
But the issue is slightly more complicated, but in the end easier to deal with.
First, the bank account. That is yours if it was held jointly with your ex. It does not matter that you were divorced. Upon his death it automatically becomes yours. Go get the money. There is no need for it go into probate at all.
The same is true of any life insurance or pensions. If you are the beneficiary, you need only go through the insurance company and the employer.
There simply is no need to go through the estate or its lawyers.
