The US Attorney is trying to build up a case against some one, and they need the evidence. It is impossible to know who the target of the case is against from what you have disclosed. The Subpoena shoudl tell you, that is a case of the People vs "someone". That is the target of the criminal prosecution.

Probably not "People v. ------ " That would be a State of California case. More likely, the case title will be "United States v. --------- " if there is any identification at this point. I am sorry to hear that you parents may be under investigation prior to prosecution of a federal offense- such as hiring illegal immigrants or an IRS related offense. If you require additional information, please contact me directly.

You'll have to ask the US Attorney, no one else knows. You can be sure criminal charges are being investigated for prosecution. They should exercise their 5th Amendment rights to SHUT UP and speak to no one except their lawyer. They should obviously hire a criminal defense lawyer immediately. If this is in SoCal, and if they are serious about doing so, feel free to contact me.
