if i was told i was subpoenaed but i have not seen the papers do i have to appear in court?

No. You must be properly served with the subpoena and paid a witness fee if you request it. To avoid any possible trouble, write a letter to the court where the appearance is scheduled telling the judge that while you were told you had been subpoenaed you never were, so you will not be attending.
