Renter's Rights

If we moved out of our apartment on the agreed upon date to vacate and left the keys on the kitchen counter, can rental property charge us rent until they decide to go pick up the keys if it stated nowhere in our paperwork specifially what was to be done with the keys?

Did you notify the management company that you had left the property, and left the keys on the counter? If not, how are they to know that you left when you said you would. It is up to you to "deliver possession", and my guess is that a judge looking at this situation will find in favor of the management company if you did not notify them you had left, and that the keys were on the counter. The management company has no obligation to go to the apartment on the day you said you would leave, without notice from you, to see if you have left. Traditionally, delivering possession means you take the keys to the management company and advise them you are turning the apartment back to them. I don't know what the point of doing this was, but it could very well cost you several days rent.
