Legal Question in Family Law in District of Columbia

I am single mother raising a seven year old girl. Her father is not contributing at all. He has been in and out jail. His most recent charge being sexual assault with a minor. I want to know, do I need to obtain legal custody of my child and if so, how?

No, as the natural mother of the child, the law already recognizes you as the legal custodian.

You might wish, however, to go to the Office of Paternity and Support on the 4th flr of the DC Superior Court to discuss the possibility of pursuing this nonsupporting father for child support.
