withholding last paycheck

I good friend of mine got fired from their job about a month ago. When they tried to pick up their last paycheck, they we're told that they couldn't have it without any explanation. There is no money owed to the company and all materials have been returned. What can be done to get their paycheck?

Your friend can send a letter via certified mail requesting that his/her former employer send the final paycheck within a week of receipt of his/her letter and advise the employer that if its not received within that time, he'll/she'll have no choice but to contact a lawyer to take formal action. That often times does the trick...
