my son needs to legitimate his child so we have ben told . the child was born out of wedlock. are there any forms that he can fill out or does this matter require an attorney

There are legitimation forms for certain county's, (ex. - Dekalb and Cobb). If your son't county does not have forms online, he should be able to obtain one from the clerk of the superior court for that county.

Your son may want to think about retaining an attorney to protect his rights relating to child support and visitation/cutody. Retainer agreements for such matters are relatively low. I charge anywhere from $750 to $2,000.

While some counties have forms, doing it without a lawyer can be difficult and even cost him money if things goes badly.
