Legal Question in Employment Law in Georgia

employer with a sharp tongue

left my job because of a c.e.o. that lets favorite employees do what they want. i quite without notice and the c.e.o. said if i ever see you hear again i'll call the cops and have you locked up. i already had another job lined up and found out that the c.e.o. called the place and the other clubs in the area and told them not to hire me and bashed my name into the ground. so i'm pretty much getting black balled, now what i want to know is that do i have a suite against the c.e.o. for slander, defermation of character, and verbal assult? my new boss was the one that told me the c.e.o. called him the next day i left and doesnt want involved, but if i have past employers, the department of labor, and a lawyer call in for a reference do i have a air tight case? and will i suffer any backlash later on down the road? the only thing i did was quit and didn't give a notice. also if i do have a case, should i go to his lawyers and all the other lawyers in town for a free consultation so he can't use any of them, before i proceed with the lawsuite? what will be most likely his outcome if i win?

Re: employer with a sharp tongue

Firstly, you would not be able to create a conflict of interest with his lawyer since it would be a conflict to meet with you in the first place. Second, it is not an ethical course of action - everyone deserves representation - nor a practical course of action unless you live in a rather small town and even then any lawyer in the state could take the case.

I would advise you to hire local counsel to look into to filing suit for slander; there is not really such a thing as verbal assault. Of course, if what he said was true, that would be an absolute defense to your action.
