Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Georgia

obligations to expired lease

am i obligated to pay past due rent to landlord if it was a year to year lease, then after one year it went month to month. we lived there 2 years, moved in feb,2004 and i moved out in january 2006, notified landlord i was moving out, by phone in jan 15, 2006. my ex wife stayed in the house another 6 months . the landlord is now stating that she is aware i notified her i was moving out, but she cannot get in touch with my ex wife , so she is trying to hold me responsible for her past due rent. am i responsible for this?

Re: obligations to expired lease

We do not have a copy of your lease to see the provisions about notice and moving out, but according to your post it looks like the apartment is still being occupied under the old lease. Generally, parties to a lease are liable whether or not they live there (unless the lease states otherwise). Did the landlord agree to relieve anyone from liability under the lease just because they moved out?
