being sued

I bought a car through Ford Motor credit. Car price approx. $10,000. With finance charges it came to $13,500.00. Over time I paid over $17,500.00 (due to some late fees I incured) and they still said I owed another (approx.) $4000.00. The car was repossesed and Ford sold my contract to a collector who is now suing me for over $6500.00. They brought to my house a summons on a Thursday at 3:30 p.m. the court date was for the next tuesday morning at 9:00 a.m. (the summons said it could not be delivered to me with less than 3 days to go before court date). It also said on the summons that if I was being sued for less than $10k I did not have to appear on that date. I have now received from the company suing me a notice that a judgement of default was made against me for not showing up and another court date has been set for 'prove-ups'. I have no idea what 'prove-ups' are.

a. Concidering all of the above is there a way I can get this re-instated?

b. I can not afford an attorney at this time and feel I am going to lose this case just on that fact. Do you have any advise for people like me in this situation?

Please, I really need help I am in over my head and do not know who to turn to for help.
