Legal Question in Intellectual Property in Illinois

Rendering of notable/marketing of prints

What 'if any' legal obligation or violation should I be aware of if I drew in pencil a national monument and a living political figure, produced negatives, mass marketed it as a print and profited?

Generally public buildings and public figures are fair game, provided you do not falsely imply sponsorhip. I would suggest the first step is to apply for a copyright registration on your original artwork, to (a) help show it is original and not a copy, and (b)to give you more ability to stop others from duplicating your artistic rendition of the public events. Recognize, however, that in the internet age, preventing widespread infringement of copyright is difficult. Expect to be Napsterized.

Call or email if you need non-free help with the copyright application or want advice on how to do this in a better way legally to maximize your protection and return.
