Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois

My former employee has threatened me with legal action unless I pay them back the full amount of tuition benefit paid to me. I worked 22 of the 24 months specified in the tuition reimbursement policy. Do I have any grounds to appeal to repay a pro-rates amount instead. Note : The policy was changed for 12 months to 24 months after I started the degree program. Policy changes where communicated via email. I did not acknowledge receipt of the policy change notice.

They have you on a technicality so if a judge were applying contract law, you would be out of luck. However, if the amount is less than $10,000 it would be worth your while to file a Small Claims Complaint with your county's circuit court clerk. I don't have enough facts to know whether your case might be decided by the judge "in equity" and not "at law."
