Legal Question in Employment Law in Illinois

I was just fired by the major retailer I work for. I missed work a handful of days last summer and one day in October. The reason for firing was because of the no-show incident in October. They said they waited until now because the manager who handles firing was on vacation for the last 6 months. There have been no incidents since October. My question is, does management have a legal responsibility to act in a timely manner?
