medical bill liability

My wife and I are claiming her father as a dependent. He has medicare and I was wondering will we be liable for medical expenses not covered or in excess of medicare coverage?

By claiming your father in law as your dependent you are stating that the person:

1. Is your relative

2. Lived with you all year

3. Had income less than 3,500 (for 2008) and

4. You provided over half of his support in 2008.

There are a few exceptions to some of this and I would suggest reading the IRS instructions to form 1040 that you can find on their website, www.irs.gov

You are not responsible for all their medical bills as long as you provided more than half of their support for the year.
