Legal Question in Tax Law in Massachusetts

Can the Comm of MA chase you forever to collect back taxes owed including penalties? I have about $4,000 owed since 2008 when my now exwife filed separately, without my knowledge, claimed all the exemptions, and kept the refund. When I filed, after her, I also claimed an exemption which was disallowed and the State wanted me to pay taxes.I was expecting a refund, but ended up owing money.

Thanks

There is no statute of limitations in Massachusetts for the collection of back taxes.

They can also do some nasty things, like levy on your accounts, cause licenses to be suspended, and more. Best to establish a payment plan - as long as all returns are filed, they will usually do a 24 month plan without much resistance.
