Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Michigan

deed transfer

I would like to sign over the deed of my old home to my nephew. I got this home from my father and never had to do any paperwork regarding it. We are no longer speeking so I'm not sure how to do it. I am not expecting any money for the house I just don't want to be responsible for it. So what do I have to do to put it in his name?

Re: deed transfer

Unless you know already, you need to check with the register of deeds to find out if the property was ever transferred to you via a deed. If it was, then you may quit claim your interest to your nephew via a quit claim deed. If it has not been transferred, then you are not legally responsible for the home, said responsibility remaining with your father. You would be responsible for any promissory notes / contracts you signed regarding the property however.
