Legal Question in Employment Law in New Jersey

I work for a large hardware store part-time for five years. my availability has not changed for the last two or more years and they were fine with this. we recently got a new manager and he wants every part-time employee to be available 20 hours a week, eight of these one week-end day. my full time job does not allow me to be that flexible so they are going to let me go. i have excellent reviews, love all my co-employees and really love being there. what are the part-time requirements on a person as far as the hours ? i thought that part-time meant that you were available when you were available and your employer could not make you change those hours or threaten to fire you for not changing your avaliability???

Unfortunately, you suffered a misappreshension.

New Jersey is an "Employment at will" state. That means that unless you have a contract, you work entirely at the pleasure of your employer.
