Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

Medical Bills for Service rendered in April, 2000

I live in New York. In April of 2000, i received medical services for injuries sustained in a car accident. I signed an agreement with the doctor to be personally liable for the bills in the case the no-fault insurance claim is denied. On June 7, 2006 i received a collection letter for these bills. They are threatening to obtain default judgement if i don't pay. Is the New York statute of limitations expired? Does the 6 year limit begin from the date the service was provided?

Please help me out. I appreciate any feedback.
