Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

I am recently engaged to be married. I am also involved in a legal scenario that occurred before I met my fiance in which, based on prior legal counsel, I do not anticipate being held liable or sued for money, but worst case scenario, could possibly be sued.

Once married, can my partner be held liable for any legal or financial responsibilities from before the marriage? If so, is there anything we can do to help protect him financially?
