Can an employer garnish wages (tips) if the employee made an error that cost the company money?

It is hard for them to do so and comply with wage and hour laws. Consideration should be given to whether you want to preserve the relationship - e.g. whether this is a hill you want to die on.

The alternative employer remedy for making a mistake is being terminated. Ordinarily you would still be eligible for UC benefits. However, now might not be the time you want to be looking for new work. And, if your income has been substantially derived from tips, you may find your benefit rate somewhat meager.
