Based on what you have written, you have not indicated whether the songs were copywritten. The protection or avoidance of royalties/rights do not come from BMI registration. Additionally, this is you "wife"; so why is she trying to avoid something that will earn money for both you and her? You should consider speaking with a law firm to ensure that you are protecting your rights and interests.
