Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in United Kingdom

Family heirloom retrieval from Museum

How would I go about getting back family items from a Museum that were donated by an author who was doing research on my family but, the person who gave him the items passed away before he could give them back. Did he have the right to donate the items to a museum and what should I do to get them back?

Author received items in the 50's and gave them to the museum in the 80's. Said author has since passed away.

I live in California and the museum is in the UK.

Thanks!

You might be able to go to court over this, but you will have to prove your claims, and you should expect to pay a substantial sum in upfront attorney fees and court and investigation costs.
