Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

Demoted then asked to resign

I was working for a company for almost 3 years, I was a Team lead for almost 2 of those years, for the last 3 months I was promoted to Sr. Team lead. I thought everything was fine, no one ever told me there was a problem with my performance, and one day I was called into HR and was double demoted to not even a team lead, then a week later I was given the choice to be writen up or to resign. The reasons for the demotion were ''not performing to the managers expectations'' there were several items that I was able to defend myself, however the manager would not allow me to defend my points and demoted me, then a week later he claimed I had a bad attitude, which I didnt, I was doing my job and keeping to myself. HR offered me a resignation wiht 3 week pay to look for a job or to be written up which would prevent me from moving from the team.

My question, I know this is not the preferred way to run a business, but now I am having difficulty finding a new job and I feel they are giving bad references, do I have any recourse?

Re: Demoted then asked to resign

No, not very probable, unless you had the protection of an employment contract prior to your coerced resignation.
