Legal Question in Employment Law in Virginia

Who to talk to

I was wondering who I could locally contact with complaints related to my previous job. I worked there for over a year and was never offered a promotion or raise in exchange for excellent work. I inquired several times only to see my requests ignored. For a time I was also asked to work more than 40 hours a week without any mention of overtime pay. Who should I direct my complaints toward?

Re: Who to talk to

Regarding the failure of your former employer to pay you, a presumably salaried employee, overtime for time that you worked in excess of 40 hours in any given week, you could file complaints against this company with the Wage and Hour Section of the Division of Labor and Employment of the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry(VDLI) as well as with the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington, D.C.(DOL).

As to your disgruntlement for the company's failure to promote you, I know of no remedy for that one as employers generally are under no obligation to promote any particular employee---ever.

Re: Who to talk to

The same also applies to the issue of raises (that is applicable to promotions).
