Legal Question in Family Law in California

My husband has full legal custody of his son and his ex-wife only has limited visitation rights with their son. When my husband is out of town working I have full care and responsibility of my stepson, as a stepparent does that legal custody transfer to me? What are my legal rights as a stepparent in a situation like this?

Generally, unless the biological mother has lost her rights, the decisions are made between her and the father. Each house can have its own "house rules", but a step-parent is not legally in the same shoes as a biological parent.

This makes it tough when there are disputes as to upbringing.
